Green discoloration on the outside of your home can have three causes: mold, algae, and mildew. Some types of growth are harmless, while others can damage your siding or roof. Knowing how to remove these substances will help you restore your home’s beauty and protect against serious damage.
Green Mildew
While mildew is often used interchangeably with mold, it is a different substance. It’s a fungus-like mold, but it usually has a chalky texture. It can be difficult to get rid of, and mildew can damage your home if it isn’t promptly removed.
Use a mixture of ⅓ cup of laundry detergent, 1 quart of chlorine bleach, 3 quarts of warm water, and an alkaline cleanser (trisodium phosphate) to clean the area. Make sure to use a soft-bristled brush and rinse the area clean.
Green Algae
You’ll notice that algae frequently forms on the north side of your home. That’s because this substance needs darkness and moisture to thrive. Fortunately, you can easily remove algae with a simple solution. Mix one part bleach with four parts water. Wearing gloves and using a soft-bristled brush, lightly scrub and rinse the area.
Green Mold
While mold has a color similar to algae and mildew, it usually has a fuzzy or soft texture. This fungi needs humidity and moisture to thrive, but it also consumes organic material to promote growth. This makes mold especially hazardous to your home.
While you can remove mold with a mixture of detergent and water, it’s not wise to handle the task yourself. You may need professional pressure washing to remove mold thoroughly and safely. Make sure to schedule this service when you expect warm, dry weather. If the surfaces don’t dry thoroughly, the mold can reappear.
